Suitable for
- Age
- 6–12 years
- Group size
- 3–5 children
- Place
- Outdoors
- Equipment
- raw eggs, paper and cardboard, tape and string, light packing material, groundsheet or plastic sheet
Duration: 45–75 minutes · Energy level: Medium
How to play
- 1
Cover the landing area and mark a clear safety zone around it.
- 2
Give each team one egg and the same amount of building material.
- 3
Ask teams to sketch an idea before building a parachute, cushioning or both.
- 4
Test from about one metre first and let teams improve their designs.
- 5
Have an adult drop each design from the agreed higher point while everyone else stays behind the boundary.
- 6
Open the packages on the sheet, compare the designs and clean up together.
Variations
- Use a small water balloon outdoors if you do not want to use food in the challenge.
- Limit the number of parts or the overall size of each design.
- Time the fall and try to make the slowest parachute without using an egg.
Tip
An adult must control every drop from height. Children must not lean out of windows or stand below the drop point.
