How to play

  1. 1

Choose a familiar area with several quiet junctions and agree when to turn back.

  2. 2

Decide that heads means left and tails means right.

  3. 3

Walk to the first safe junction or fork and flip the coin.

  4. 4

Follow that direction if it is safe and accessible; otherwise an adult chooses another route.

  5. 5

Repeat at new junctions until half the available time has passed.

  6. 6

Take a simple route home and count how often the coin chose each direction.

Variations

  • Use heads for straight on and tails for a side road.
  • Take a photograph of something interesting after every third flip.
  • In a park, roll a die to choose between up to six agreed walking options.

Tip

The coin chooses only between safe options. An adult always has the final say around traffic, private areas and routes that would make the return too long.

Rules can vary between places. Read how we work with sources, variations and quality checks.
