- Age
- 4–12 years
- Group size
- 1–2 children
- Place
- Outdoors
- Equipment
- small bucket or spade, optional
Duration: 30–90 minutes · Energy level: Medium
How to play
- 1
Ask an adult to choose a shallow, slow section with firm footing and a clear view.
- 2
Collect loose stones, sticks and leaves nearby without pulling up plants.
- 3
Place the largest pieces at the bottom and fill small gaps gradually.
- 4
Pause often to watch where the water flows over, around or through the structure.
- 5
Change one small part at a time and compare what happens.
- 6
Take the dam apart and return the materials before leaving.
Variations
- Build two small dams and compare which shape slows the water most.
- Make only a narrow channel in sand or gravel at the edge.
- Let younger children carry small stones in a bucket while an adult builds in the water.
Tip
Use only shallow, slow-moving water and steady footwear, and stop if the current or footing makes the area hard to manage.
